Run of the Month - David Gilmour
By Skinny Devil - David M. McLean
This year (2007) marks the 60th birthday (yep, this month - March) of Pink Floyd's legendary guitarist David Gilmour. Gilmour joined Pink Floyd way back in 1967 and helped fule mega-hit albums like "Dark Side of the Moon", "Animals", "Wish You Were Here", and "The Wall" with his tasty, economical, lyrical guitar style. His style has always featured note choice instead of blazing technique, as evident in solos from songs like "Mother", "Learning to Fly", "I Can't Breathe Anymore", and "Comfortably Numb".
In 2006, "Comfortably Numb" was voted "Best Guitar Solo of All Time" by Planet Rock, and other solos of his have earned similar accolades. Here, then, is a beautiful arpeggio-based lick from the first solo in "Comfortably Numb". Note not only the excellent note choice, but the ear-grabbing 1/4 note triplettes.
